Zoom and Speech

Presented in collaboration with Richard Eskins

The days of sitting alone in a bedroom typing mystic symbols at a computer keyboard in order to gain access to material on the far side of the world are gone forever. But what if the person using the device cannot see, or if the person only has reduced visual acuity? In our presentation we will demonstrate the use of the iPad to access various sites using both magnification (suitable for those with a visual impairment) and text-to-speech which is how most blind people use such devices.

About Donal

Dr. Donal Fitzpatrick is a lecturer at the School of Computing at Dublin City University. His interests include website accessibility, gestural interfaces, and finding ways for people to access complex data without looking at it. When not sitting in front of a computer, or playing with his iPad, Donal can often be found standing behind the goal at the Stretford End of Old Trafford, or skiing rather too fast down steep snow-covered hills.
